New England-style House Rebuild Project

Sherborne contempory windows hampshire

We were delighted to work with our trusted Premium Retail Partner, Sherborne Windows, on an extensive rebuild project, which brings a luxurious flavour of New England to a rural hamlet in Hampshire.

This transformation is also featured in the April 2019 issue of SelfBuild & Design magazine at www.selfbuildanddesign.com

Having lived and worked in the USA, David Lofthouse was keen to bring a New England style to their new, dream home in the UK. The Lofthouse family bought their four-bedroom 1960s property back in 2012 and then set about remodelling it, which involved rebuilding 80% of the house. The finished result is a stunning 5,000 sq. ft. property, which includes six bedrooms, six bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen/dining/living room and outdoor swimming pool.

The Lofthouses’ aim was to build a low-maintenance family home, while being as eco-friendly as possible. Although their architects originally suggested timber windows, Sherborne recommended they install Evolution’s wood-effect uPVC timber alternative windows and French doors instead. The idea being that these new windows would have the authentic look and feel of a traditional timber window, but needed none of the laborious, regular sanding and repainting.

House Rebuild Project

Working closely with the Lofthouses to create the perfect design, Sherborne installed a total of 24 Evolution windows throughout the property. The windows had to be designed especially to sit within the cladding, which gives the house its quintessential New England style. The architects said afterwards that these were the most realistic wood-effect windows that they had ever come across.

Most of the casement windows have been chosen from Evolution’s Storm range, in order to maintain traditional, clean lines. Taking inspiration from timber, Storm windows offer robust yet beautiful styling, as well as intricate detailing to joints and finishes. The Lofthouses’ chosen window design includes handcrafted Georgian bars, clear bottom panels with floating mullions and small top lights, in order to give the best view possible over their fabulous gardens. The windows’ aesthetic appeal has been further enhanced with the use of wrought iron monkey tail handles to give a traditional finish.

Evolution’s Flush range was used for the galley-style landing, which is a key design feature of this new-look home. Flush windows showcase sleek window lines that fit flush into the window frame, in contrast to the Storm windows that overlap the frame. While Flush windows are often used in period homes, they are being increasingly used for contemporary properties too.

In addition to the white wood finish windows throughout, Sherborne also fitted three bespoke round porthole windows, three French doors and two single patio doors from Evolution. French doors offer the perfect way to bring the outside in, while flooding rooms with natural light. The bespoke French doors in this property have been used to provide access from some of the bedrooms out onto the balconies and pool terrace. As you would expect from Evolution, these French Doors have also been meticulously designed to provide outstanding security features. Each set of doors is equipped with a high security multi-point locking system to ensure total peace of mind.
