How To Stay Cool This Summer

We are all loving the heatwave we are experiencing at the moment but staying cool this summer can be a challenge. Rooms can get exceptionally hot, especially when there are large windows within a room which can result in not using the room as much as you normally would.

Considering extending your home? Adding a Conservatory or Orangery is a great idea to add additional living space to your property and really allows you and your family to enjoy your garden and outdoor space in this glorious summer weather. But you will be adding a lot of windows and glass into the space and again this can lead to incredibly hot rooms that can be uncomfortable to use at points.

Solar Coated Glass

This is where the exceptional technological advancements of Pilkington glass come into their own. Every double glazed window or door handcrafted by Evolution Windows uses Pilkington glass and is available with solar controlled coating. Available as an additional option, the solar controlled coating will help you stay cool this summer by reducing the heat gain and can provide a more comfortable and pleasant environment for you and your family to live and work in.

This advanced technology allows sunlight to pass through glass, which radiates and reflects away a large degree of the sun’s heat, leaving the indoor space remaining bright but much cooler than it would be if normal glass was used.

The coating added to the window is an invisible layer of special materials on to the glass which have the dual effect of allowing sunlight in, while repelling heat. A coloured or mirrored finish can be used on the windows if this aesthetic finish is requested, but generally most people would use the invisible solar control finishes that truly doesn’t take away from the aesthetic look of the window frame and window furnishings.

Expert Tips To Keep Cool In A Heatwave

We also spoke to Rachael Kirby-Tyre, a leading Interior Designer from My Interior Design School to get some advice on what we all can do to keep our homes cool in this heatwave:

  • Keep curtains and blinds closed as soon as the temperature starts to rises outside
  • Curtains made from heavier weight fabrics will help reduce the amount of light and heat entering the room
  • Curtains and blinds with blackout linings and interlining will help keep more heat out
  • Some blinds have reflective backing fabrics, which will reflect the sunlight and heat from the sun. If your curtains have standard linings and this is not sufficient at keeping a room cool, you could add a roller blind behind that has one of the reflective fabric backings, which can be pulled down during the day on the hotter summer days
  • Lights and appliances generate heat so turn them off if you are not using them
  • Use air conditioning units or fans to generate a breeze but be careful as standard fans don’t produce cool air, they just circulate hot air around the room.
