All Double Glazing Looks Cheap

old ugly windows

Double glazing in uPVC, and more latterly PVCu, frames has been the commonplace in homes in the United Kingdom since the 1970’s. While it rapidly gained in popularity, it did have its detractors. One of the main complaints about PVCu double glazing was that the frames just looked like cheap plastic, the frames all looked the same and did not contribute to the aesthetics of a home.

Much of the criticism of “plastic windows” aesthetics had a point. In the beginning, uPVC had a very plain and dull quality to it. It certainly didn’t look as robust, authentic or full of character of more traditional timber window frames and fixtures.

However, a lot has changed over the years and new technologies mean that modern PVCu double glazing gives you control over the style, colour, and even the finish of your new windows.

Technology Has Evolved and Progressed

Over the last 20 years alone, there have been great strides made in the technology behind the construction of double-glazed windows and the materials used in them. This has meant there is great variety available when it comes to aspects such as style, colour and the finish.

You can still opt for the classic white and smooth PVCu if that’s what will go best with your property. However, you don’t need to make that compromise if you want the benefit of double glazing and PVCu, but want to uphold, maintain and even enhance the traditional and old-fashioned aesthetics of your home on both the exterior and interior.

double glazing is ugly

Along with all those great aesthetic benefits, you also get the increased thermal and sound insulation that comes from double glazing. Are the wood-effect foils any good though? Surely you can tell the difference.

Well the truth is you really can’t. At Evolution, we’ve had many experts say that unless you look closely and check the finest of details, our wood-effect window options will fool just about anyone.

Another great benefit of using PVCu is that it’s designed to look like wood is very low maintenance. Like all PVCu, the most you need to do to it is clean it with a damp cloth and some water and gentle detergent - that’s all. So, you don’t ever need to put the time or effort to maintain the look of those timber-effect windows as you would with the real thing.

Wood-Effect Foils and Joints

One of the biggest improvements with double glazing and PVCu fixtures is the fact that you don’t even need to opt for white or a coloured plastic look for your windows. You can now get wood-effect foils, like those available from our collection here at Evolution, that are wood-effect. So, if you are looking for the character, the grain, the rustic appeal of timber around the windows in keeping with the original style or the style you are trying to achieve with your home, you can have it.

In addition, modern manufacturing techniques means that new windows can replicate the look of timber butt joints, that than the angled welded joint common on older PVCu window frames.

Real Cast-Iron Furniture

One of the other ways that modern PVCu double glazing has been designed and built to not look as cheap and tacky as they did in the past is by the choice of furniture available. You can now easily have more traditional fixings and furniture, like real cast-iron detailing and handles added to modern timber-effect windows.

This helps to give it a truly authentic and sophisticated appeal that opposes the cheap and plastic look that so many people are put off by.

So, if you have long been against having double glazing, especially PVCu windows, installed in your property. We hope you can see that things have moved on and are very different from the way they used to be. You can still have those classic windows, and all the aesthetics, with the appealing aspects of non-timber windows, such as:

  • Easier and less involved in maintaining them.
  • Easier to clean.
  • Better thermal insulation.
  • Better sound insulation.
  • Better protection against the elements.
  • Won’t break down, warp or otherwise damage with changes in temperatures.
